Waveguide are used at microwave frequencies for the same purpose as transmission lines are used at lower frequencies.Hollow metallic pipes are used for this purpose, they do not support TEM waves. The waves supported are of TE or TM type. Waveguides with rectangular cross section are most widely used. For example WR- 90 X – band waveguide has internal dimensions of 0.9 in by 0.4 in and is used for frequency range of 8.2 to 12.5 GHz. Circular waveguides are not as widely used. They find applications in high – Q resonators.
